Our Story

How Terne Lab Began

Terne Lab was founded in Kuala Lumpur with one straightforward intention: to offer interior design that takes the long view. The name comes from the idea of quiet cultivation — spaces that are tended carefully, not rushed to completion.

Our founding team had worked across a range of residential and commercial projects before coming together here. What drew us to this studio format was a shared frustration with design practices that prioritise speed and surface — and a conviction that the people who live and work in a space deserve more than that.

Today, Terne Lab works with homeowners, businesses, and hospitality operators across the Klang Valley. Our projects vary in scale, but the approach remains consistent: unhurried, honest, and guided by what each client genuinely needs.

How We Work

Standards We Hold Ourselves To

These are not policies — they are practices that shape every project we take on.

Written Briefs & Agreements

Every project begins with a clearly written scope. Scope changes are documented and agreed upon before work continues.

Client Confidentiality

Project details, floor plans, and personal information are not shared externally without explicit client consent.

Industry Affiliations

Our designers hold memberships with the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) and maintain current CPD standing.

Sustainable Sourcing

Where practical, we recommend materials from suppliers who observe responsible forestry and ethical production standards.

Clear Communication

We document all key decisions, share meeting notes, and ensure clients are never left uncertain about the status of their project.

Professional Indemnity

Terne Lab carries professional indemnity coverage appropriate to the scope of design services we deliver.

Interior Design in Kuala Lumpur — What Terne Lab Brings

The interior design landscape in KL is broad — from large commercial firms to solo practitioners. Terne Lab sits somewhere between: a small, specialist studio with the coordination capacity to handle projects of real complexity.

Our work spans private residences in Mont Kiara, Bangsar, and Damansara, as well as small office and retail interiors across the Klang Valley. We have worked in older terrace houses with awkward proportions, new-build condominiums, and everything in between.

What defines our approach is not a single visual signature, but a consistent process: listening carefully, designing with purpose, and remaining present throughout the renovation phase. We believe a well-designed space should feel like it belongs to the people who use it — not to a design trend or a portfolio photograph.
